Perak Road/Macalister Road junction – Sisters char koay teow

sisters char koay teow

At the junction of Perak Road and Macalister Road, there are two kopitiams which are very famous with out of town folks. One is the famous Sisters Char Koay Teow coffeeshop.

Personally, I do not like the char koay teow because it is too dry for my liking and it lacks the evil lard. The above plate of char koay teow costs RM5 but it has only three prawns which are not very fresh and huge. But for the sake of blogging, I do it. 😛 The whitish thing on top is tasteless crab meat.

orh kuey

However, the best orh kuey or yam cake comes from this coffee shop. Many people buy them in bulk to bring back to KL and even Singapore (by flight). The plate above costs RM3. It has generous toppings of dried shrimps, fried shallots and spring onions. When dip in chillie sauce, it is one of the nicest orh kuey around because this orh kuey has lots of yam, i.e. the floury flavour of the yam.

otak otak

The orh kuey seller also sells otak-otak. It must be the biggest packet of banana leaf with the smallest piece of otak-otak I have ever seen. The taste is ok lah…. Overall, the prices of things in this coffeeshop is much more expensive than other places because as I said, they cater for out of towners.

mee jawa

The coffeeshop displays proudly ‘Best Jawa mee, original recipe’. Best or not, I do not know but it is certainly not original at all. Jawa mee is supposed to have potatoes in its gravy plus some ground peanuts. Still it is worth a try. Only RM3 with pieces of taukua, hard boiled eggs, fish cakes, fritters and something not seen elsewhere, huge prawns. I prefer my Jawa mee with those crispy batter but there is none of that.

This stretch of Macalister road has only one way traffic and hence, you have to turn in from Perak Road.

Hi Lilian, Char Koay Teow… hmmmm… try the stall @ Jalan Bawasah, I Think there’s a Nasi Melayu Norman (something sounds like that.) The old couple started the business at 8 am…before noon, all sapu habis! One thing though they don’t use Lard 😛 Maybe for health conscious eaters this place is the one for them. My sister and her hubby said it’s seafood is fresh and chilli is wonderful and quite a large plate. Until now, I haven’t have the chance to eat a single Koay Teow strip from that seller because I can’t exit home earlier than the stall… 🙁

Hi, I dont know why people say bad things about that Macalister/Perak Road char koay teow. When I was a kid I use to help them, when the husband was alive and I use to cycle to Anson Road to buy fresh Koay Teow teow and Tow Geah for them when they run out. I even peel prawns for them and always get a free meal and some pocket money. If the koay teow is no good or delicious why they can survive for that long? I think it has been at least 54 years since they operate that stall. Whenever I go back to penang for holidyas I always go for a feed and guess what…… I got it free because she still remember me and I am now residing in Perth,Australia and always recommanded my friends who ever wanted to go to penang to go and try the Macalister Road Char Koay Teow. I use to live just opposite the stall. Gene of Perth West Australia.
