Bayan Baru market : Char bee hoon, ban chean kueh

The Bayan Baru market hawkers went way back to the early 80s. Back then, they used to be located at some dark spot with only pushcarts. There were some hawkers whose foods were good like the char koay teow, mee jawa, economy beehoon and ban chean kueh.

Much later, they moved into the current hawker centre adjoining to the Bayan Baru wet market complex. I do not know where the char koay teow short, fat lady has gone to. But the char bee hoon and ban chean kueh uncles are still selling the same things after 20 years.

The two stalls are located at the fringe of the hawker centre, facing Sunshine Bayan Baru. These few stalls started business around 4-5 pm, making the bee hoon and ban chean perfect for tea time.

The bee hoon costs RM1.20. Beside the beehoon, the uncle also sells bobo chacha, red beans, groundnuts, bubur gandum and green beans. His tongsui is nothing special but I guess with expensive santan (coconut milk), he couldn’t afford to make anything special.

ban chean kueh

The ban chean kueh uncle has a very lansi face and yet, he does brisk business. 20 years back, he was lansi. 20 years later, still lansi. But he is quite friendly and allows you to eat first, pay later.

If you go there, don’t forget to grab some yau char kwai, hua chee and ham chim peng which is next to the char bee hoon stall. But wait, don’t eat yau char kwai, ham chim peng right now because I heard that the ammonium bicarbonate contains melamine.
