Nice chuchar - Behind Caltex, Green Lane
by lilian ~ June 5th, 2007. Filed under: Food, Hawker foods.I have been to this corner coffeeshop behind Caltex, Green Lane many many times and yet, I don’t think I have seen the name before. However I love the food there so it is time I make a post about this place. It is along Jalan Besi, very near to my church, Cathedral of the Holy Spirit (that blue cross opposite Convent Green Lane?)
At night, the place has good mee mamak, chu char and other things. Chu char means cook and fry or what you call economical foods. The above is a plate of very expensive looking abalone like dish. But it is just brocolli, tofu and abalone mushroom or bailing mushrooms.
I love their curry fish head so much, I purposely leave a piece of fish and pretended I cannot finish it. So, I ask for them to tapau so that I can finish the curry gravy at home. LOL, I know it is very cheapskate to do so. But I tell you, the gravy is that good. Today, I merely boiled some egg noodles and dunked into the curry. Nice!
The service is good but due to the crowd, you may need to wait for a while. The owners will recommend to you their special dishes. I saw another table eating this and ordered the same. It is young bayam cooked with the two types of eggs - century egg and salted eggs.
Beside this, we also had a chicken dish and the bill only come up to RM65 for three adults and one kid.
If you can stand a slight bitterness, you must order their fresh nutmeg juice. It is really nice and full of the tangy nutmeg flavour as the fresh nutmeg is grinded to make juice. However, it is a bit bitter. You will expel a lot of gas after a glass.
So, give this place a try the next time you are around the Green Lane area. Turn in from the traffic light into Jalan Besi (opp the Buddist temple), go straight and look out for one corner kopitiam. There is only one there, so you can’t miss it.

Hi..truly enjoy your site. In fact, never had the time to write anything but I am writing now .. for the very first time. Anyway, just saying hi. Heard that there is a get together for Penang bloggers. How do I get involved?

Wow, I always go around Island Glade but when I am back to Penang but franksly speaking I seldom explore further down to Green lane, this time must try your recommendation.
Tks,

The Bailing Goo looks great.
What is the name of this dish in Hokkein?

The name of the kopitiam is Sing Ka Poh (if correctly spelled). It’s been awhile since I’ve been there (2 years I think :P). Each time I pass by, the place is crowded. So my family rarely wants to dine there. We didn’t try these dishes featured here. Maybe I should persuade them someday
