New Lane Chee Cheong Chook, Chee Cheong Fun

Chee Cheong Chook and Chee Cheong Fun from New Lane, off Macalister Road where Sunway Hotel is are the best in Penang. These two things plus the tong sui are the only reasons why I would bother to squat by the roadside, next to the drain and swarmed by beggars.

chee cheong fun

The above is the chee cheong fun or pig intestine noodle with only heh kor or dark, sticky, stinky prawn paste and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. The chee cheong fun is made of rice flour which is steamed into sheets and rolled up, looking like pig’s intestines.

chee cheong chook

The above is the chee cheong chook or pig’s intestine congee. This is the real stuff. The innards of pigs. If you don’t have the Fear Factor or Anthony Bourdain’s adventurous streak, don’t try it. The thought of a bowl of pig’s intestine, pig’s tongue, pig’s heart, pig’s everything swirling in a mush of rice, which looks like foods processed by the stomach can be a turn off.

However, I swear that it is really nice. The sweetish, crispy deep fried intestine, soft, gelatinous boiled intestine plus the muscled tongue is gooood.

Another look of the real and fake intestines, both equally revolting or nice, depending on your taste buds.

Yeah, the chee cheong chook is the best there!! Even after moving to KL, my family would still ‘tar pau’ the chee cheong chook back to KL whenever we go back to visit Penang. If it is possible, I would get people to deep freeze it and DHL or FedEx the chee cheong chook to me now in US. It’s THAT good 😛 Thinking of it makes me ‘lau nua’ already now.

The beef noodles in New Lane is also very very goood.
