Kickapoo Joyjuice – Perfect drink for Penang foods

This afternoon when I passed by the Tua Pek Kong Western Foods at Vale of Temp, a truck load of MPPP people were dismantling the famous western food stall. I haven’t been eating there for a long time because I hate the darkness, the crowds and heat. So, it is not a big loss to me eventhough this western food stall is rather popular here.

One of the thing I notice is this stall sells a lot of Kickapoo. I am not sure why but there are stacks of Kickapoo Joyjuice bottles there. So, whenever we want to identify the western food, we always call it the ‘kickapoo western foods’.

So, let’s get to know what Kickapoo Joyjuice is.

kickapoo joyjuice

It is this yellowish soda. I just learnt that it is lemon-lime soda. And do you know what cartoon is on the tin? The cartoons have been discontinued but when I was very young, it was featured in the newspaper every day.

There is even history to it.

A liquor of such stupefying potency that the hardiest citizens of Dogpatch, after the first burning sip, rose into the air, stiff as frozen codfish. A more agreeable version is now produced by Monarch Beverage of Atlanta, Inc.

and if you wonder why it is call joy juice :

Lonesome Polecat & Hairless Joe: They make Kickapoo Joy Juice- if it needs more body, they throw one in!

Now you know why the drink can shows someone in a tub.

You can read about the cartoon Li’l Abner and also Kickapoo history from this site.

Kickapoo is certainly a nice drink. I like it because it is a cross between Sprite and F&N Orange, minus the orangey colour.

What about you? Are you a Kickapoo’s fan too?

Kickapoo … wah , when I drink it, I feel like a kid again! Also miss Green Spot orange drink.

During Chinese New Year , of the bygone days, I used to eat kueh kapit dipped in ice cold F&N or Green Spot orange. Taste soooo good!!

The drinks came in glass bottles and sold in crates. They were so heavy!

sweet jasmine – Yalor, I miss those days when we only get to drink gassy drink ONCE A YEAR! Now, I call this drink KehKakBoh (makes no sense but it is keh kak, rooster, boh – female)

momo – We all same generation mah, so sure know those wooden crates, delivered by the sundry shop owner. Sarsi, Ice cream soda, orange crush. I must eat groundnuts and F&N orange to feel Chinese New Year.

angie – Ya hor, the colour is really unique.

kyh – It is easily available now and selling well I think.

charming/charlene – Each country has their own special orange crush, right? I know in Hongkong I enjoyed one orange crush drink very much but cannot remember the name. Then, there are those imported from Japan ones, also very nice. But too expensive for us here.
