Curry Mee – Lorong Seratus Tahun

Lorong Seratus Tahun  (100 years lane?) is accessible from Jalan Macalister (the road across Agora Hotel) through Naning Street.  If you are in Jalan Dato Keramat, turn in from Seang Tek Road.

The surroundings are old shoplots.  Seen here is the lottery seller that goes from table to table.

These are the siblings   who sell the famous Lorong Seratus Tahun curry mee.  The little stall is perched on edge of the coffeeshop and business is always brisk.  They had been selling the curry mee for decades, previously operated by their father.

This is the curry mee that drives people to the coffeeshop.  Unlike some curry mee, the soup is not overly flavoured with coconut milk.  Instead, it has some flavour which is unique to this stall.    This bowl here costs RM3.20 and is garnished with cockles, coagulated pig’s blood, tau pok and soaked squid (jiu hoo).

Customers get to add their own chillies.  There is a whole bowl to help yourself to it.  The chillies is the one that brings out the taste in the curry mee.  Beware though, most people stomach cannot take too much of this hot stuff so don’t overload if you don’t want to run to the toilet ever so often.

The first few mouthfuls of the curry mee is ‘just normal’ but after a while, the ‘kick’ kicks in.  :)  Usually, most people will slurp the soup dry.

There are other branches of Lorong Seratus Tahun curry mee (previously one in Anson Road operated by the fatter sibling) but somehow, the curry mee tastes nicer when eaten from the original stall by the roadside.  Whenever we went outstation (eventhough for just a day or two), we will come back to Penang and savour Lorong Seratus Tahun curry mee or any other curry mee because no where else has excellent curry mee like Penang does.

They used to have a branch in SS2, PJ but closed down oredi coz the taste wasn’t that appealing to the tastebuds here. They’re hoping to sell based on their name and reputation but dunno leh, i found their curry mee (in PJ last time) really not that great.

i’ve tasted good curry mee from a 3-wheeler stall along Perak Road (near Tor Lor Au) that opens only in the afternoons. very generous with the rempah paste – you can scoop as much as you want

The quality drops when I visit them last week. Not as nice as it use to be. They are too commercialize now. The chili taste and spicyness maintain however the coconut soup quality drops.

[…] first knew this curry mee from penangfaces. And I also read that the special thing about their curry mee is the dark chilli sauce, which adds […]

Have you tried the curry mee in Pulau Tikus? The corner shop opposite Bellisa Row and next to Pulau Tikus Plaza. I love that, minus the pig,s blood as I dont take it. Instead of blanched jiu hu, they give fried jiu hu. It is priced at RM2.50 (the last time I had it was before CNY. Hope the price still maintain)
