Jalan Macalister : Chinese economy rice

econ2

Economy rice is synonymous to Mom’s cooking. In Malaysia, we eat rice as the staple meal. To accompany the rice, we have a few dishes.

The above photo shows a wide variety of dishes, pre-cooked and served hot. Some stalls allow their customers to scoop their own rice and dishes, very much like a buffet. Some owners will do it themselves.

Economy rice stalls get their name ‘economy’ because the food sold is usually very cheap. It sells no frills type of dishes, basic things like stir fry vegetables, stew meats, curries, fritters, egg omellete and dishes normally cooked by most Chinese homes.

In the above picture, you can see tamarind prawns and soya sauce chicken plus a wide variety of delicious foods.

This economy rice stall is located along Jalan Macalister where Abu Sittee Lane junction is (diagonally across the road). Look out for a big food court called Remember Food Court. The stall is housed in these orange coloured pre-war houses, next to Remember FC. One can’t miss the place because it is always crowded during lunch and dinner hours.

We had mantis prawns fritters, peanut soup, tofu with shrimps, curry stingray and stir fry yam. Two person portion with 3 rice (one for my toddler) – total cost RM11. Not entirely cheap, right?

    Hmmm… I am hungry 😛

If you ever come down KL, either wingz or I can bring you to a nice economy rice shop in Cheras. Pretty cheap and lots of variety too.

wow, mantis prawns. KL’s economy rice does not have those luxuries. Maybe that is why it was more expensive? Prices here are abt RM3 to RM3.50 depending on what you take.
