Caunterhall flats eating place

Caunterhall area has one of the earliest low cost flats.  My uncle & auntie used to stay there in their one room, miniscule high rise flats. The place is still very cramp but it has some of the nicest foods around Penang.

Their morning market has a lot of stalls with good food, i.e. provided you can stand the crowd and the din.  During the afternoon, their hawker food court has very nice nyonya kueh stalls alongside other hawkers.

At night, there is another group of hawkers.  Food prices are relatively cheaper than other places.  The hawker food court is next to the open field, near the roundabout at Heng Ee’s school.  For those not familiar with Penang, you can access this area from the side road of McDonald’s Green Lane.  Just go straight down the road, reach the roundabout and look out for the hawker stalls.

At night, they have this seafood stall which only sell shellfishes like clams, lalas, siput and the above ‘helicopter’ spiky clams.  They also sell crabs which is baked.  No frills and cheap.  RM5 per plate.

This is the main reason we go to Caunterhall.  Seafood package baked with delicious sambal and wrapped in banana leaves.  The cost of this package is RM12.  It has two squids, 1 large prawn, a piece of stingray and okra .  The portion is enough for two person, taken with white rice.

There are many other nice foods there like Stadium Curry Mee, Rex PohPiah and Jelutong Mee Mamak.  If you are not from around the area, do be careful with your belongings as this place is from the poorer part of the island.

Bah!  Internet connection is so slow, so I shall leave you with only one more photos eventhough I have other goodies to share.

This is Rex Poh Piah which is RM4 for two.  It has real crab meat with real crab roe.  A rarity nowadays when every hawkers cheat with crabstick which is not crab but processed fish.

I’ve tried the seafood package baked with delicious sambal before too. It was certainly awesome! But it was quite stuffy there, so I seldom go. There’s one Indian stall selling delicious Indian food too. I tried their Puree with Mutton Curry and it was good! Oh ya..I had the ice kacang with fruits…not bad:)

I grew up sampling those food. I’ve been eating the wan tan mee stall by a fair fat lady wif glasses and fried chicken since i was of ya toddler’s age. The Chinese Pan Cake (Bang Chang Kuih) is one of my fav too. I was under my gransparents care who reside in Taman Free School.

Used to take the bus to komtar wif granny and when we ar on the way back, grandma will say, “Kuan Ta Hor” to the bus conductor. Taman Free School = Kuan Ta Hor ??

Till last yr only i knew of the name Caunterhall thru a fren’s parent. But But But.. from where the name Caunterhall terbit from still remain a puzzle to me.

Food sold near the low cost flat area are usually cheap and good. Another good area for cheap food is the rifle range food court. But is is sooooo difficult to find parking there.
